Diabetes Update 93: Talking Meters

April 1, 2006

By David Mendosa

  • A Meter That Talks Sense.
This article is about blood glucose meters for the blind or visually impaired. It is mostly about the forthcoming SensoCard Plus but includes all of the other talking blood glucose meters, including the brand new Prodigy. My article originally appeared in the March 2006 issue of Diabetes Health and is now also online here.

  • My Diabetes Blog
My new blog entries for March are:
    • Support by Newsgroup. Two of the many newsgroups are especially helpful in providing emotional support to people with diabetes.

    • The Carb Controversy. Should you follow the recommendations of the American Diabetes Association to eat a diet rather high in carbohydrates? Or should you follow the recommendations of famous endocrinologist Richard K. Bernstein to eat a very low-carb diet? Maybe something in between, like eating low glycemic? This crucial choice is yours, because the experts disagree.

    • No More Second Fiddle. The lancets and lancing device that you use are in some ways more important that your blood glucose meter. One of those ways is to minimize the pain of fingerstick checks.

    • A Little Help from our Friends. Jeff Myers and other diabetes coaches provide education and positive role models to others who have heard only horror stories about living with diabetes.

    • Curing Diabetes. There’s no cure for diabetes  —  yet. But the controversial research on embryonic stem cells is already showing promising results.

    • Can You Get Enough Fiber? Do you know how much fiber you need and what are the best sources for it? Don’t bother to read this blog entry if you do, because that is what this article is about.

    • Arginine: A Marvel or Quackery? A highly respected endocrinologist and a Nobel Prize winner both recommend taking large doses of the amino acid arginine. They say that it can prevent heart disease and stroke, something of great interest to anyone with diabetes.

    • Which Cinnamon? It matters which type of cinnamon you use to help control your diabetes. They differ in taste and cost. But they all can reduce your blood glucose levels.

    • New Meters. Two of the biggest blood glucose meter manufacturers announce new devices, and the third big company is also coming out with one.
    • Fear of Needles and Diabetes. The needles that people with diabetes use to inject insulin or Byetta are so short and thin that, unlike lancets, we can hardly feel them. Why, then, are so many people afraid of them?

    • Testing Targets. Six different organizations have established different blood glucose targets for fasting and after eating. If you want to set your goals for these levels, this is the place to start.

    • Byetta Works. I know now from my personal experience on Byetta that it works. In my first month and one-half on Byetta it has exceeded my weight loss and glycemic goals.
