Hike softly, carry walking stick. Those are two of the main maxims for the trail, whether or not you have diabetes.
The latter is among the least observed. I just came back from three days of wilderness hiking in northern Colorado. In all that time I saw few people on the trails and a lot fewer even who had sense enough to carry a walking stick or two.
Mailing lists, which I wrote about here earlier, aren’t the only way to reach out for support on the Internet. Newsgroups have the same function and are often the first place that people newly diagnosed with diabetes go to seek out information on the Internet. I know that when I got my diabetes diagnosis in February 1994, one of the first things I did was get an Internet account so I could read a diabetes newsgroup.
When you want the latest and best information about diabetes, you can read this blog or my website. But where do you go when you are looking for a sense of community with other people who have diabetes and need emotional support?
