Since today is Christmas, you might expect that I would have charity for all, as Lincoln did in his Second Inaugural Address. But I don’t feel charitable to the sweet little squirrel that spends most of its time in the Russian olive tree in front of my apartment.

I love to watch that squirrel. But I don’t like to watch it taking the suet that I buy for the woodpeckers that I attract to my bird feeder. I know that I should be more charitable, because this is a hard winter for squirrels too.

When the squirrel got at the suet, little pieces fell to the ground. One of the Northern Flickers that has been visiting here regularly dug through the snow for them.

When I started feeding suet to the birds, my friend Sharon told me that I could also expect Downy Woodpeckers to visit. Today, however, was the first time that I saw one here.

This little woodpecker is perched in the same tree fork where the squirrel was in the first photo above. This is a female Downy Woodpecker. Soon, I expect a male to follow.
