Golden Gate Canyon

In the Rocky Mountains the aspens are past their peak. Today my friend Sharon and I hiked Golden Gate Canyon State Park in search of them. We found few leaves on those trees. The wind and snow over the weekend wiped most of them clean.

But we nonetheless had a great hike, one that was much better than the difficult one we made there on July 1. Both times we hiked a couple of miles up the pleasant Horseshoe Trail to Frazer Meadows in the center of the park. Five trails radiate out from the meadows, and in July we took the only one that allowed us to make a loop without hitchhiking. That Black Bear Trail was so steep in places that we didn’t enjoy it. So today we went down the same trail we came up.

Near the meadows is the grove of aspen where three years ago I had made one of my favorite aspen photos.

We were just five days too late this year. But instead we found chickadees right there.

Then, a few minutes later we found this woodpecker.

Sharon spotted this tableau of raindrops on leaves and red berries.

Near the end of the hike we had to wait while this chipmunk enjoyed its lunch so much that it didn’t move off the trail for several minutes. We patiently waited while it finished its food. What’s the hurry when you are having fun?
