The route from my apartment to the home of my friend Sharon takes me right by Baseline Reservoir. I stopped there this morning when I saw this view a few minutes before sunrise.

Our destination this morning was Walden Ponds, a Boulder County Open Space, nine miles northeast of my apartment. We had read a report on COBirds that a Green Heron was visiting there. Since we are at the limit of this bird’s range, we see them here rarely. Because Green Herons hunt at night, the best time to see them is early in the morning.
Sharon spotted the heron on an island in Bass Pond, one of the Walden Ponds.

“It’s going to fly,” Sharon told me. She was right, and I was ready.

While we were watching the Green Heron, something big swam right by the bird, who watched it as intensely as we did.

Later, we went over to another pond, where we found an aquatic plant starting to bloom and a hardy flower of spring still in bloom.

We even saw something beautiful that isn’t natural. Humans build beautiful bridges, boats, and balloons.
