Diabetes Update 122: My Interview

September 1, 2008

By David Mendosa

Butterfly

A Painted Lady At The Loch, Rocky Mtn Natl Park: "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly"

I don't know of anyone who lost more weight on a low-carb diet than Jimmy Moore. He weighed 410 pounds when he changed his life. In one year he was able to reduce his weight to 230 pounds. That's a difference of 180 pounds.

So I'm not surprised that he has become a leading advocate of the low-carb lifestyle. His blog is Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb

Jimmy just interviewed me for his blog. You can hear the interview at David Mendosa Talks Low-Carb and Diabetes (Episode 169).

So far I have written 308 articles for Health Central about all aspects of diabetes. In August this great website published nine more of my new diabetes articles:

  • Meter Reports. Whenever Consumer Reports evaluates blood glucose meters, it's big news. Its new review rated 13 meters from eight different manufacturers. More interesting is the meter model that the magazine rated excellent in consistency and accuracy.

  • Conquering Sleep Apnea. About half of all of us who have diabetes also suffer from sleep apnea. But you can conquer it. I know you can because I have.

  • Living Longer with Byetta. Taking Byetta can lower our chance of dying compared with other diabetes drugs by about 75 percent. That's the real story as presented at the ADA's recent Scientific Sessions in San Francisco, not the recent scare over pancreatitis.

  • The Best Time to Lose Weight. Any time is a good time to lose weight if your body mass index is over 25. But controlling your weight right after diagnosis helps the most.

  • A Better Reason to Reduce Salt. We thought that we could relax about the amount of salt we use after Gary Taubes exposed the weak evidence that it increases blood pressure. But now it seems its bad for our hearts in another way.

  • Renew Lancing. Lancing devices and lancets don't get the respect they deserve. Until recently we have had few choices, and most of them were nothing to write about. We have another interesting choice now.

  • Glucocard X-Meter. The idea of intelligent design certainly applies to Arkray's Glucocard X-Meter and X-Sensors. This is a great system to take everywhere.

  • Taste More, Eat Less. When our food tastes better, we might eat less. Low-calorie seasonings and spices are wonderful -- except in the evening.

  • No Time for Exercise. The problem with the review of a new study showing that we have to exercise an hour a day to keep the weight off is that almost no one has time for it. But with all the labor-saving devices we have, who needs exercise anyway?

  • Dr. Bernstein's Webcast
If you have any interest in controlling your diabetes by low-carb eating, one of the best resources is Dr. Richard K. Bernstein's monthly webcast. It's an hour of excellent diabetes education.

Dr. Bernstein's next live Tele-Seminar is Tuesday,
September 23, at 8:00 PM EST, 7:00 PM CST, 6:00 PM MST, and 5:00 PM PST. He designed it to answer your most important questions concerning diabetes and to offer his thoughts on the latest developments in this area. This call will focus on insulin and other medications. The seminar is free. You can click here to register: http://www.diabetes911.net/askdrb/index.php. It's also available as a live webcast both on the Internet and by phone.
