Diabetes Update 120: Obesity Tips

July 1, 2008

So far I have written 290 articles for Health Central about all aspects of diabetes. In July this great website published 13 more of my new diabetes articles:

  • Obesity Tips. How to control our weight is a big issue for people with diabetes. Essentially everyone with type 2 diabetes struggles with it. Fully 85 percent of all adults with diabetes is either overweight or obese, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Centers for Diabetes Control and Prevention. So these nine tips from an endocrinologist where I live can help all of us.

  • The Most Accurate Continuous Monitor. Abbott's new FreeStyle Navigator is the most accurate continuous sensor yet tested. But the experts who tested them didn't have a chance to check out the DexCom Seven, which is reportedly better than DexCom's first generation sensor that they looked at.

  • Shirataki Noodles. When you start eating low-carb, you may find as I have that soon you don't miss stuff like bread, rice, or potatoes. But my body seems to think that it still needs noodles. Fortunately, shirataki noodles are a great low-carb choice.

  • ADA: Day 1. The news from the first day of the annual scientific meeting of the American Diabetes Association was how both the ADVANCE and the ACCORD studies show that using drugs to cut our A1C levels to about 6.5 doesn't cut our risk of heart attacks, at least in the short term. Could the drugs themselves have been the problem? Some experts think so.

  • ADA: Day 2. The good news I gleaned from the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting is that A1C tests are remarkably accurate. I got six tests on five different devices on the second day of the meeting, and the results were as close as anyone could desire.

  • ADA: Day 3. New devices for people with diabetes were the high point of the third day of the American Diabetes Association's meeting. New and forthcoming blood glucose meters are better than ever. I am especially looking forward to a completely integrated device that Pelikan Technologies is developing.

  • ADA: Day 4. The fight between Amylin and Novo Nordisk over their GLP-1 drugs was the most exciting part of the fourth day of the American Diabetes Association's annual meeting. It must be a nightmare for those companies, but promises to be a dream for those of us with diabetes.

  • ADA: Day 5. The American Diabetes Association introduced a new concept in the fifth and final day of its annual convention in San Francisco, which I attended along with almost 21,000 other specialists in diabetes. The "estimated average glucose" or eAG replaced the former gold standard, the A1C test.

  • My Supplements. One of the questions that readers ask me the most is what supplements I take. Here are the ones that I take and why.

  • Pycnogenol for Diabetes Control. Just as I was about to stop taking Pycnogenol, along comes a high quality study that convinced me to keep on using this supplement. Here is what it can do for those of us with diabetes.

  • The Most Beautiful Meter. The Bionime Rightest GM100 needs a better name. But it looks beautiful and works beautifully too.
  • Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes. A new documentary, "Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days," focuses on the experiences -- both positive and negative -- and the interactions of six people with diabetes who ate only raw food for a month. Here's how they fared.

  • It's Low-Carb Weak. Some people report that they feel weak for the first couple of weeks on a very low-carb diet. Professor Loren Cordain, the author of The Paleo Diet, explains why.
  • Free CPAP Machine Offer

I don't need my CPAP machine any more. It is a ResMed S8 Autoset Vantage APAP complete with a humidifier. I wrote about it at HealthCentral.com and think is the best CPAP that there is for obstructive sleep apnea (although not for the much rarer form, central sleep apnea). I used it for about a year before I was able to reverse my sleep apnea, as I wrote here.

If you have sleep apnea, need a CPAP machine, and can't afford one because you don't have any medical insurance, please contact me by email and give me your phone number so I can call you to work out details. Do not call me. My address is [email protected]

    Dr. Bernstein's Webcast

If you have any interest in controlling your diabetes by low-carb eating, one of the best resources is Dr. Richard K. Bernstein's monthly webcast. It's an hour of excellent diabetes education.

Dr. Bernstein's next LIVE Tele-Seminar is Wednesday, July 30, at 8:00 PM EST, 7:00 PM CST, 6:00 PM MST, and 5:00 PM PST. You can click here to register: http://www.diabetes911.net/askdrb/index.php. It's also available as a LIVE Webcast both on the Internet and by phone.
