Ever since I discovered the glycemic index a dozen years ago, I thought that I knew that anything we eat or drink has to have calories for it to raise our blood glucose levels. In fact, those calories have to come from carbohydrates – not protein or fat – to give those levels much of a spike.
Nutritionists used to say that a carb is a carb is a carb. Now that they understand the glycemic index they know that’s not true.
If you believed everything that you read here, there is almost nothing that you can put in your mouth and hope to live a healthy life with diabetes. This is particularly true if you have gastroparesis or paralyzed stomach, as I wrote here recently.
To live a good life with diabetes has to mean first that we control our blood glucose. But it also means enjoying the good things in life.
