Better Hydration for People with Diabetes

Endurance athletes and hot yoga enthusiasts are hardly the only people who have to stay hydrated. Anyone who has a sweaty job needs to make sure to replenish the minerals lost at work. People like me who have diabetes need to be especially careful to stay in balance.

Even if you aren’t much of an athlete or work in a hot and humid place you can perspire a lot when you go to the tropics. I know from my current experience.

Right now I am writing from Caye Caulker, a tiny island in the Caribbean Sea off the mainland of the Central American country of Belize. I am here primarily to photograph birds, and that requires lots of hiking. The weather has stayed mostly at 80° hot and 95-100 percent humid.

To  stay hydrated I don’t just consume a lot of salt. That can help in an emergency. When I was a kid in high school, I had a summer job washing bottles in a dairy at the western edge of the Colorado desert. When I collapsed after a few days, my parents took me to our family doctor, who prescribed salt tablets. While I was able to go right back to work, this wasn’t an ideal solution.

Taking salt tablets doesn’t completely restore our electrolyte balance. When we sweat, we lose not only salt (sodium) but also potassium, calcium, magnesium, and other minerals. To combat the sluggishness, cramps, and headaches — or make them go away — we have at least seven options.

But almost all of these choices are high in calories and carbohydrates. To combat the electrolyte imbalance from the heat and humidity of Belize I am using some Ultimate Replenisher that I brought with me from Colorado.

This electrolyte replenisher is sweetened with stevia and has no sugar anything artificial, unlike the other brands. It works like real food, but faster.

My friend Dale always takes it with him when he climbs one of Colorado’s 54 mountain peaks higher than 14,000 feet. He says that when he does a big hike like that, he requires the intake of an electolyte source.

“I am grateful for the Ultima product line,” Dale told me. “It is the best product line I know of. I am amazed at the stamina I have as I hike.”

He has also helped several other mountain climbers by giving them Ultima Replenisher. At least one of them was so exhausted as he sat on a high saddle of Longs Peak that he couldn’t move up or down the mountain. But after a glass of Ultima Replenisher, he was able to resume his climb in just a few minutes.

I like the taste of its wild raspberry flavor. My friend Barry likes both the wild raspberry and the grape flavors.

This afternoon I am going to do more birding. So to complete this article I just added a heaping teaspoonful of Ultima Replenisher to a glass of bottled water and drank to my health.

This article is based on an earlier version of my article published by HealthCentral.
