Eating locally grown food must be better for our health than eating the dead stuff flown in from thousands of miles away that crams our supermarkets. It’s especially important for those of us who have diabetes and are therefore most concerned with good nutrition. But it’s not easy to do. [Read more →]

Avandia Anxiety
May 22nd, 2007 · No Comments
Steve Nissen has a way of getting everybody’s attention. And he does that with tools that in anybody else’s hands would be deadly dull. This week he captured the attention of one of the country’s most prestigious medical journals, the Food and Drug Administration, U.S. senators and members of Congress, our leading newspapers, Wall Street, class-action lawyers, and last, but hardly least millions of people who have diabetes. Some addictions are positive, unlike addictions to drugs. Years ago I broke my addictions to nicotine and to tetrahydrocannabinol. Those were a couple of the hardest things I ever did, but doing that was sure good for my health. [Read more →]

C is for Cure
May 13th, 2007 · No Comments
When I was in the Army years ago, I heard a lot of different obscenities. Nowadays, however, the one I hear is the word “cure.”

This article wants to be excused for jumping the queue. Since it is hot news, this article skips over what C, D, and E are for, which are patiently waiting for their turns.
But we do know that F is for Failure. Don’t take it personally. I’m not talking here about you or me. I’m talking about the failure of non-invasive blood glucose meters. [Read more →]

B is for Byetta
May 6th, 2007 · No Comments
At first I couldn’t decide whether B was for Byetta or for better. Then I realized that it didn’t matter.
Byetta is better. It is better at helping people with type 2 diabetes to lose weight than anything else. And the longer I use it the better it helps me at controlling my appetite and increasing my exercise. Byetta is pretty darn good too at bringing down our A1C. [Read more →]

A is for Accuracy
May 3rd, 2007 · 1 Comment
When we talk about blood glucose meter specs, we using consider how fast the meter is and the sample size. That’s because few meters have any accuracy worth talking about.
But one small company concentrates on accuracy. And this company, AgaMatrix Inc. in Salem, New Hampshire, just came out with a new meter that I think will blow away the competition. [Read more →]

One of the advantages of having diabetes is the chance to try all sorts of different, new, and exciting foods. Maybe you haven’t experienced that yet, but people all over the country keep sending me diabetes-friendly products to try.
Most of them are healthy and tasty. Anyway, none of them have poisoned me yet. One of the most surprisingly good foods that I’ve had the pleasure of eating arrived a couple of days ago. [Read more →]
